Get 100% of Your New Business From Referrals

Relationships are your absolute cheapest source of new business.  Build strong referral relationships and you can stop throwing money out the window on expensive advertising campaigns.  In today’s world, entrepreneurs can realize 100% of their new business through referrals and word-of-mouth advertising like networking.  Relationships, however, must be built, and maintained, in order for them to be productive.

Referrals from those you meet at networking events are great.  But there is an even more valuable (and reliable) source:  Your Current Clients.

On average, 60% of your clients aren’t taking advantage of all your services. Why?  Because they don’t hear from you.  90% of your customers would give you a referral yet only 10% have been encouraged to do so.  That other 80% is lost revenue!  Every month, you lose 10% of your influence on those clients.  Just a 5% increase in customer loyalty could yield up to an 80% increase to your revenue.  That loyalty is easily gained simply by staying in touch.  

We all know it’s cheaper to keep a client than it is to replace one, yet most businesses lose up to 17% of their clients every year simply because they don’t practice relationship building.  Sure, you may send them an email occasionally, reminding them how great they are or telling them about your newest product. Or maybe you mailed them a glossy brochure or flyer.  That’s marketing, not relationship building. Did you know that only 3% of the mail we receive these days is personal?

True relationship building involves several types of contacts, the most endearing of which is the hand written card.  Okay, most of you just blanched and some of you have already moved on to another page or task.  

For those of you still reading, the art of sending a real card, in the US mail, is still one of the best ways to tell your client you truly value their relationship.  If you include a valuable piece of information in that note, it becomes more than a card, it becomes a reminder why they liked doing business with you in the first place.

Statistics report clients will buy from you again, all you need to do is keep in touch. Contacting your clients every 90 days, on average, is easier than you think.  People have the best of intentions, we know that sending a thank you card makes good business sense but we’re all so busy, we argue, and we just never get around to it.  Avoid this costly mistake.  Invest a little time into setting up a reliable (and easy) stay-in-touch system and start mining your clients for an additional 80% of missing revenue.  

Keeping in touch with clients is something that can be delegated to a virtual assistant.  I can’t say enough about the value of having a VA.  I currently employ two VAs and have found it’s freed up about 40 hours a month.  I now use those hours to work on my business instead of in my business. And the added revenue more than pays for the virtual assistants.  

Referral-only business is considerably less expensive than traditional advertising.  Used consistently, you can truly realize 100% of your new business simply by practicing solid relationship building practices.
