Identifying Your Perfect Client  (and why it matters)

Okay, so someone like me walks up to you and says “Who do you need to meet – who is YOUR perfect client?”  How do you respond?  

Do you typically say “I can serve anybody!” or “Everyone needs what I sell!”  I hope not.   Saying “anybody” or “everybody” is your perfect client is like saying ”I haven’t really determined who is most likely to buy my product.”  

Unless you’re the only funeral home in a small town, you can rest assured ‘everyone’ is not your client.  It’s imperative you take this to heart and understand you must be selective in how you spend your marketing time.  Make no mistake, the time you spend attracting clients is very expensive. Most solopreneurs, entrepreneurs and small businesses have a limited amount of budget they can commit to marketing. It's critical you focus all your marketing effort on a particular type of client so you don’t waste time on suspects.

Many of you have probably already figured out your perfect client is the person or business that brings you the most joy and the most revenue.  But it goes deeper than just that.  If you look closely, there are certain types of clients you prefer to work with.  The best way to demonstrate this is to ask you to think about your absolute favorite client.  That one person or client that – if you lost them today –would devastate your business.  

Now think about your top ten favorite clients and ask yourself, “What do they have in common?”  Is there a gender or age group?  A particular type of industry or business?  Perhaps a particular type of profession?  Do they share a typical characteristic or symptom?

I’ve discovered my perfect clients are solopreneurs, entrepreneurs, and small business who build their business through networking, either online or in person. They are most often women and tend to be accountants/CPAs, attorneys, doctors, alternative healers, staffing firms and coaches.  

The thing they all have in common?  They are highly educated and they deal in complicated terminology that is difficult to understand. They often speak in terms their clients don’t recognize so their networking efforts are disappointing due to an inability to communicate what they really want to say.  I take their over-the-top jargon and translate it into something their clients recognize immediately – and respond to.  This is only one problem they have, but it’s a good example and demonstrates my point.

Your point is to understand who YOUR perfect client should be.  Once you’ve narrowed that down, you’ll know exactly who you should be looking for at networking events.  You’ll also know what to tell others when they ask “Who do you need to meet?”
